HISTORY AND ABOUT APPLETON ESTATE RUM

FROM THE HEART OF JAMAICA, APPLETON ESTATE SEDUCES THE SENSES AND INSPIRES THE SOUL.

Appleton Estate is authentic Jamaican rum that is made in the Cockpit Country – a unique, lush and fertile terrain that is nestled inland, in Jamaica’s beating heart. The beautifully complex and aromatic Appleton Estate rums are produced on our estate, which makes it one of the few rums in the world to claim a terroir—and the only rum in the world that has a terroir as unique as the Nassau Valley. “Terroir” is a set of unique weather, soil and geographic demarcations that impart a unique quality to all of our rums. Proof that it really does matter where your rum comes from.

At the Appleton Estate, the production of our rums is a craft. Every step in the process is carefully managed, from the selection of the varieties of sugarcane that are grown on the Estate, to the natural culture of yeast used in fermentation, to our unique distillation and blending methods. Appleton Estate has the distinction of being the oldest sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica in continuous production, crafting this delicious rum with the warmth, passion and unique spirit of Jamaica for more than 265 years.

Appleton Estate Rum Heritage

From the Unique Topography of Cockpit Country, in the Heart of Jamaica the Appleton Estate is nestled in the Nassau Valley, which is located in the parish of St. Elizabeth. The first known documentation of rum production on the Appleton Estate is dated 1749. However, it is believed that the origins of the Estate date back to Sir Francis Dickenson in 1655. The Estate may have changed hands over the years, but since 1749 all Appleton Estate rum have been produced with a passion for rum and a love of the land from which it is produced.

Appleton Estate Rum Process and People

Fuelled by passion. At Appleton Estate, it all starts with the land – lush, fertile, and filled with undiscovered beauty. We cultivate the natural, earthy ingredients that go into making each barrel of rum on the Estate – from the sugarcane that we grow ourselves, to the limestone spring that supplies our water. Our rums are aged in 40-gallon Number One Select American Oak barrels, which impart more vanilla flavour and make the rum smoother and less woody. Our rum is perfected by our Master Blender, Joy Spence, the first woman to be appointed Master Blender in the world. Through Joy’s expert guidance, Appleton Estate offers the world’s finest rums.

Appleton Estate Rum Green Manufacturing

Beneath our amber hues you’ll find we are very green. At the Appleton Estate, we are committed to preserving the environment and have made a significant investment in our plant, equipment and training to ensure that our operations in the Nassau Valley (as well as our head office in Kingston) are in line with this promise. From our ash-free boiler that only emits water vapor into the atmosphere to how we process filter press mud, everything we do at the Appleton Estate is with sound environmental initiatives in mind. And we have the International Standards Organization Certification to prove it.
